Scope of technologies

Corrosion resistance from zinc coating on steel has always been a function of relative mass as measured by weight.  Defined by ounces per square foot total applied to both sides, conventional nomenclature defines the amount applied by continuous process to the strip. 

As coating weight increases, time to red rust increases.  In fact, ASTM 653 states this relationship: “the life of the zinc coating is a linear function of coating mass for any specific environment. That means, to achieve twice the life for any specific application, the user should order twice the coating mass.”

InterCoat®ChemGuard is bound to revolutionize this galvanized nomenclature and the expectations for the performance of steel in corrosive applications.

Next Generation Galvanizing Technology – Improvement of Standard Zinc Coating Weights

Our solution

As licence agent TEC Swiss AG is globally supporting and promoting the revolutionary InterCoat®ChemGuard technology. The process represents a real game changer in the galvanizing industry and will change and improve the sustainability of galvanized steel production for decades.

A chemical compound in use and in testing now for several years, InterCoat®ChemGuard, patented in 13 countries, including the EU, causes this rule to be obsolete.  This product is now coming to the international market.  Applied at the end of a galvanizing line, the chemical affects the zinc at a molecular level, greatly improving its performance in resisting corrosion.  A Z90 coating weight of zinc with this compound applied resists red rust longer than Z700.  Less expensive than zinc, it outperforms with up to 85% less zinc in standard corrosion tests (ASTM B117 salt spray).

Several implications of adopting this technology are clear.

Reducing inventory costs
Supplies of zinc ingots held by producers of galvanized steel will last longer, thus reducing inventory costs.
All ranges reduced to one
All ranges of galvanized products currently offered can be reduced to one: Z90 with varying levels of this formula for increased protection
Variables will be reduced
Therefore, setup times and procedures, calibration of air knives, molten zinc formulas, line speed and other changeover variables will be reduced.

Carbon emissions and power consumption are reduced
Carbon emissions and power consumption are reduced simply by using less zinc for comparable corrosion protection, as the creation of a ton of zinc ingots generates three tons of CO2 and will be used at a considerably lower rate.
High degree of lubricity
Because the formula dries in place, with a high degree of lubricity, no oil is needed as protection for transportation and storage, nor does it need to be removed by the OEM.
Any passivation or chemical treatment is no longer necessary to prevent rust
Any passivation or chemical treatment currently applied for protection during transit or storage is no longer necessary to prevent rust. This includes Hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen and environmental hazard
As a RoHs compliant, water borne formula, the coating as applied is environmentally friendly
As a RoHs compliant, water borne formula, the coating as applied is environmentally friendly, causes no additional operations to be performed on scrap, and is likely to require fewer governmental reporting requirements in most locales.
